The Academy’s Mentor Protégé Reading Program will pair high school scholars, administrators, parents, and other community volunteers with struggling second grade readers, initially in the International School at Gregory in Wilmington, North Carolina. The Academy promotes academic excellence in early childhood education, leadership, character hard-work, respect for others, and parental/family involvement for all second grade Protégés participating in the program.

Barbara Highsmith Reading Academy, Inc. (“the Academy”) is an IRS approved, tax-exempt charity, under the Internal Revenue Code (IRC) Section 501(c)(3). As Proclaimed by Mayor Bill Saffo and the City of Wilmington, NC, July 15th is designated as Barbara Highsmith Reading Academy Day. The Academy is a membership organization dedicated to supporting the literary needs of struggling second grade readers in Wilmington, North Carolina, initially at the International School at Gregory.

The Academy will raise funds for annual book donations to Gregory. The Academy currently has a Literary Partnership with Scholastic, Inc., one of the world’s largest publishers of children’s books.
